Truth vs. Tradition
Many believers have inherited teachings that contradict scripture. Here we examine common misconceptions against the unchanging Word of Truth.
"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." - 1 Thessalonians 5:21
"Jesus fulfilled the law so we don't have to keep it. The Old Testament law was nailed to the cross."
What was nailed to the cross was our certificate of debt, not the commandments.
"We're saved by grace, not by keeping the law. Being 'under grace' means we don't need to obey God's commandments."
"Under the law" means under the penalty/curse of the law (death for sin). Grace doesn't give us license to sin (break the law).
"Jesus declared all foods clean. Peter's vision proved we can eat anything. God changed His mind about dietary laws."
Peter's vision was about accepting Gentiles, not changing dietary laws.
Even in the future kingdom, those eating unclean foods will be consumed.
God's dietary laws were given for our health and holiness. He doesn't change (Malachi 3:6).
"The Sabbath was changed to Sunday to honor the resurrection. Constantine officially changed it. The early church worshipped on Sunday."
The 7th day Sabbath is the 4th commandment, a perpetual covenant.
Jesus expected Sabbath observance to continue after His death.
Gentiles asked Paul to preach on the Sabbath, not Sunday. There is zero biblical authority for changing God's Sabbath. Sunday worship came from pagan sun worship mixed with Christianity.
"Once you accept Jesus, you can never lose your salvation no matter what you do. You're eternally secure."
Names can be blotted out of the book of life, proving salvation can be lost.
"We should celebrate Christmas and Easter to honor Jesus's birth and resurrection. These are Christian holy days."
This describes and condemns the Christmas tree tradition 600 years before Christ.
Easter (Ishtar/Tammuz worship) was an abomination to God. Neither holiday is commanded in scripture. Both have pagan origins (winter solstice/fertility festivals).
God's actual holy days are listed in Leviticus 23.
"The Old Testament law was only given to the Jews. Gentile Christians don't need to keep the law."
Gentiles who keep the Sabbath and hold to the covenant are welcomed.
Gentiles are grafted into the commonwealth of Israel, not a separate entity.
"Paul said we're not under the law. He taught that keeping the law is bondage and legalism."
Paul himself declared he believed ALL things written in the law.
Paul was accused of teaching against the law, but it was proven false.
Peter warned that Paul's writings are hard to understand and often twisted.
Don't take our word for it. Search the scriptures daily to see if these things are so.
